California Repair Technician Update Training
BAR UPDATE COURSE #UT059
12-hour curriculum

CIRCUIT TESTING TOOLS & STRATEGIES

UT059 is a BAR-certified 12-hour smog technician update training seminar using ATG’s 270-page manual. Instructors receive a full PowerPoint presentation, notes, schedule, final exam, and answer key. This shorter format allows for technicians to complete the 16 hours of update training using the mandatory 4-hour online training through BAR.

Course Description

Most technicians have had some formal electrical training, but even when it is hand’s-on, the lessons are hard to apply back in the shop. To bridge this gap, UT059 was developed to instill a decision-making process into each lesson by training technicians to first categorize the fault type. The manual that comes with the class contains extensive tool and test descriptions, along with tables to explain the best tool and test combination, and the relative usefulness of alternative tools and tests, for every type of electrical fault.

Rarely-taught skills integrated into the curriculum include:

  • Circuit overlays
  • Circuit isolation
  • Load substitution
  • Tracing the current and enabling paths through wiring diagrams

All of these skills are explained and demonstrated using actual case studies, and basic electrical testing skills are honed using fill-in exercises. Combining fault-type definitions, practical testing skills, and some great tips helps technicians quickly trim the possible cause list to make electrical diagnostics fun and profitable.
